Help at Home

The Council provides practical support to help residents remain living independently in their own homes.

The Home Support Program is designed to assist frail older people and adults living with disability by promoting safety, comfort and wellbeing.

Eligibility

To access Home Support Program services, you must:

  • Live in the Council area
  • Live independently at home.

 Be:

  • A person aged 65 or over with moderate to severe disability, or their carer
  • A person aged 18–64 living with moderate to severe disability, or their carer
  • At risk of requiring residential aged care or hospitalisation without support

Available services

Personal care (short term)

This service supports individuals recovering from hospital stays or experiencing temporary incapacity.

Up to 30 hours assistance per year.

Includes help with:

  • Showering
  • Dressing
  • Grooming and hair care.

Cleaning (long-term) 

Ongoing support is available for residents who need help maintaining a clean and safe home environment.

Up to 2 hours per fortnight. 

Cleaning May include:

  • Mopping floors
  • Vacuuming
  • Cleaning bathrooms and toilets
  • Laundry
  • Changing bed linen
  • Cleaning kitchen surfaces.

Home maintenance and modifications 

This service focuses on improving safety and accessibility within the home.

Maintenance may include:

  • Basic yard tidying
  • Minor tree trimming and fence repairs
  • Replacing tap washers and lightbulbs
  • Gutter and window cleaning (annual)
  • Minor carpentry work
  • Installing locks.

Modifications may include:

  • Grab rails
  • Ramps
  • Bannisters.

How to apply

Adults living with a disability (18–64 years)

You or someone on your behalf (a family member, carer or GP) can make a referral directly to the Council.

A Home Support Officer will contact you to arrange an initial meeting (45–60 minutes) to understand your needs.

Older residents (65+ or 50+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people)

To access services, register first with My Aged Care or call 1800 200 422. You may be referred to a Regional Assessment Service for further evaluation.

After referral, a Council officer will contact you to discuss your support plan.
