Mary Hill has been captivated by the ancient landscapes of the South Australian Gawler Ranges for over a decade, photographing, and more recently painting, them. Hill found Lake Gairdner, a large salt lake, particularly compelling and was drawn to the everchanging patterns created through the effects of water transforming the landscape. While the patterns created by the water, when present, over the salt are both fragile and fleeting the larger landscapes said to be over 300 million years old.
The chair/seat, a simple place to sit, to take it in, to be for an instant, is an imposition. The intrusion a human object onto the landscape, a symbol of the burden with which nature is compelled to contend.
Her colour palette remains limited: cadmium red, magenta, pilbara red, veridian green and white. Rather than mixing paint, she builds a painting by using each colour individually. By layering each colour one on top of each over and over Hill is able to achieve a vibrance of colour and depth
