A new Emu Crossing will be installed on Tarcoma Avenue adjacent to St Joesph’s Primary School and Property 4 to improve safety for school children.
Project details
The Tarcoma Avenue emu crossing is a part-time road crossing that will operate when children are arriving and leaving the St Joseph’s Primary School grounds.
Emu crossings feature white road markings and orange ‘CHILDREN CROSSING’ flags displayed on red and white posts.
To facilitate the construction of the emu crossing, a permanent removal of three on-street car parking bays will occur.
Further to this, an additional nine on-street parking spaces will be restricted on school days between 8:00am – 9:00am and 2:00pm – 3:30pm to facilitate pedestrian sightlines at the crossing.
The implementation of an emu crossing at this location will improve safety for children attending St Joseph’s Primary School and their families.

Background
The emu crossing project was initiated in 2021 and a design and consultation undertaken.
Following this, St Joseph’s Primary School requested that construction of the crossing be placed on hold due to their internal construction works.
The Council was reapproached by the school in July 2024, requesting to proceed with the emu crossing, while also requesting that investigations be undertaken for an improved location to better align with the school access gate and pedestrian desire lines.
As a result, the Council was required to undertake new designs and another consultation process with the community.
Funding
The Department for Infrastructure and Transport is contributing $15,000 through its Way2Go program, covering 50% of the $30,000 project cost. The Council is funding the remaining $15,000.
