The 2025 AFL Gather Round will return to Norwood with two afternoon games to be played at the iconic Norwood Oval.
On Saturday 12 April reigning Premiers Brisbane will take on the Western Bulldogs and on Sunday 13 April, GWS go up against St Kilda.
Council releases proposed heritage policy changes for consultation

The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters has released its Inter-war Housing Heritage Code Amendment for public comment.
The draft Inter-war Housing Heritage Code Amendment proposes to improve the protection of buildings that were built between World War 1 and World War 2 (referred to as the Inter-war period) which are worthy of heritage listing or additional protection.
St Peters Street Project wins National Award

The awards keep coming for the St Peters Street upgrade, with the project recently recognised in the 2024 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects National Awards held in Melbourne on 24 October 2024.
After collecting four awards at the South Australian Institute of Landscape Architects Awards earlier this year, the St Peters Street Project has also been awarded the National Award of Excellence for Infrastructure and the National Climate Positive Design Award.
$440,000 Federal Government Grant to be used for footpath upgrades!

The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters will invest a $440,000 Federal Government Grant into upgrading local footpaths in addition to its funding allocation of $950,000 in 2024-2025.
The Council will receive the funding as part of Phase 4 of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCI), which was established in 2020 during COVID-19, to support Councils across Australia.

There is just over a week until the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters erupts with the excitement, anticipation and energy of the AFL Gather Round and there is still the opportunity to secure tickets to two exclusive events as part of the Council’s Festival of Footy.
To kick off the weekend of activities, the Council has secured some of the biggest names in SANFL history for the Champions Lunch to be held in the Norwood Concert Hall on Thursday 4 April.
Mayor Robert Bria said the idea behind the Champions Lunch was the Norwood - Port Adelaide rivalry being one of the oldest and fiercest in Australian football.
“Now, as part of the 2024 Gather Round Festival of Football, you can relive some of the magic moments from two of the great grand finals of the 1980s.
“South Australian Football royalty and FIVEAA sports presenter, Tim Ginever will headline this special event with Michael Aish and Neville Roberts.
“With a theme meticulously curated to honour the victories of Norwood and Port Adelaide, every detail of the event is a nod to the indelible moments that shaped our football legacy.
“The Champions Lunch, is a step back in time, and a unique opportunity to pay homage to the football legends who left an indelible mark on SANFL history.
On Saturday 6 April, right in between the two blockbuster AFL matches which have already sold out at Norwood Oval, and in order to celebrate the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters hosting the highly anticipated St Kilda vs Richmond game, the Council is hosting a once-in-a-lifetime culinary event in an open air dining spectacular on Osmond Terrace.
The Rivals Long Lunch is co-hosted by the renowned MasterChef contestant Malissa Fedele and Sam Worrall-Thomson from restaurants BarLune and Dolly.
Mayor Bria said Chef Malissa Fedele has curated a menu that will showcase the finest local produce sourced from the Council’s local manufacturers.

Finalists announced in Eastside Business Award – with new category acknowledging outstanding and continued success

The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peter’s Eastside Business Awards continue to gain significance and momentum and 2024 is proving to be another resounding success with a record number of local businesses nominated.
Today the finalists were announced with some familiar names such as Cheeky Grin Coffee, Mary MacKillop Museum, The Colonist and Reform Distilling making the short-list in their respective categories. While eight businesses have been named a finalist for the first time, including JAKS Hire & Events, Merlin Post Productions and Physio Smart.
Mayor Robert Bria said this year the Council wanted to recognise those businesses that had been identified as a winner three times in the same category by creating a Legends Category. Those businesses that have historically been successful in winning a category three times will be recognised as Legends at the Awards Night.
“To be an Eastside Business Award winner or finalist, shows that a business has had lasting impact not only on an individual, but also the wider community, and that is something to be immensely proud of,” Mayor Bria said.
“It’s exciting to be able to announce a new Hall of Fame recipient as well as a number of businesses who will be elevated to legendary status,” Mayor Bria said.
Last year’s Hall of Fame winner was family owned and operated, Gelato Bello, located in Glynde.
Since being honoured with the Hall of Fame crown, Gelato Bello has been a featured at many Council and community events.
“Owner Marcus Nardone and his family are examples of how hard work, customer loyalty and producing a quality product - in this case some of the finest Italian gelato in South Australia – is a tried and true recipe for success,” Mayor Bria said.
“The Council is constantly thinking outside the square when it comes to supporting our local food, wine and manufacturing industries and the Eastside Business Awards are the perfect way to help those businesses to be recognised as some of the best food and beverage manufacturers in South Australia.
To be crowned the Hall of Fame winner a business must have operated within the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters for more than 20 years.
The 2024 Hall of Fame winner will be announced at the Awards ceremony, which is being held at the Norwood Concert Hall on 23 April 2024.
City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters awards contract for Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre Redevelopment

The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters has advanced its plans for the redevelopment of the Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre, awarding the construction contract to South Australian-based Badge Constructions SA.
The project - which is estimated to cost $60 million - is the biggest investment in the City’s infrastructure.
Mayor Robert Bria said the Council is excited to be working with a national construction company and on-site work has already begun, with 100 FTE jobs created during construction.
“The Council is delivering what we have long committed to the people of the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters – a brand new, significantly improved Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre.”
“The Council understands the historical, cultural and social significance of this facility and is proud that our community will have a magnificent state-of-the-art facility in its own backyard.”
“The local community, swimming clubs, schools and regular users have been waiting patiently for the redevelopment of this much-loved facility and they will not be disappointed with the final product."
“The Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre will be the pinnacle of aquatic leisure centres, promoting health, well-being and recreational opportunities, as well as providing thousands of children with the life-saving skill of learning to swim,” Mayor Bria said.
The Payneham Swimming Club was first opened in 1968 by the former Payneham Council and, despite several repairs and plant replacement over the years, it has reached the end of its useful life and is in need of significant investment.
“For this facility to stay open it needed a significant investment and that is exactly what Council is committed to. In short, the days spending money on patch-up jobs at the pool are over,” he said.
The Centre’s design has been shaped by extensive community and stakeholder consultation. The Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre Redevelopment will include:
- a 10 lane, 50 metre outdoor pool;
- an 8 lane, 25 metre indoor pool;
- an 11 x 20 metre indoor learner’s pool;
- a 14 metre tall tower with two waterslides;
- a zero-depth waterplay area;
- multiple male, female and unisex all-access changerooms with showers, toilets and lockers;
- multipurpose meeting rooms; and
- shade shelters and picnic seating.
Each pool will have an all-access entry via a ramp or lift, and aquatic wheelchairs will be available for public use.
Badge Constructions is an award-winning builder renowned for its expertise in similar community-focused sport and recreation projects, including the Scotch College Wellbeing and Sports Centre in Torrens Park and the Wulanda Community Centre in Mount Gambier.
“The decision to award the contract is extremely exciting and I would like to thank the community for their patience while we have undertaken this significant body of work to ensure that the project is a success."
The Centre's funding includes a $5.6 million grant from the State Government’s Local Government Infrastructure Partnership Program.
Acknowledging that the cost of the build had escalated significantly since it was first announced by the Council, Mayor Bria said the economic landscape, most notably interest rates, inflation and skill shortages and supply chain issues, has had serious knock-on effects to the nation’s construction industry.
“Notwithstanding this, in making this decision the Council commissioned an independent Prudential Report which included a detailed review of the potential impacts of this project and its ongoing financial sustainability. The Council is satisfied that it will be able to meet its financial obligations and continue its financial sustainability without unnecessary impact on our ratepayers.”

Exhibition at The Gallery is crowned 2024 Adelaide Fringe Weekly Award Winner

A Fringe exhibition now on at the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters’ dedicated arts and culture space, The Gallery, has been named a 2024 Adelaide Fringe Weekly Award Winner.
The exhibition, If fabrics could speak, was created by artist Catherine Fitz-Gerald and is inspired by the community's memories of fabrics.
Through digital storytelling and a series of still-life images, 30 voices aged six to 91, share how the fabric pieces evoke memories of special moments in time.
The Adelaide Fringe awards are given to acknowledge outstanding events presented within the Adelaide Fringe program, judged by a panel of arts industry leaders and arts lovers.
The exhibition has also been highlighted for its accessibility, with Ms Fitz-Gerald and the Adelaide Fringe Fund working together to show how The Gallery, at St Peters Hall - which is a State Heritage Listed building - could be transform into an accessible space without excessive cost.
The exhibition features the following accessibility provisions:
• daytime shows;
• audio descriptions;
• Auslan interpreter (at the opening night and one exhibition);
• relaxed artist talks (every Saturday during Fringe);
• guided tactile tours;
• suitable for audiences who have English as a second language; and
• room to manoeuvre roller and wheelchairs.
Mayor Robert Bria said he hoped providing greater accessibility would encourage more visitors to The Gallery.
“Congratulations to Catherine Fitz-Gerald on this fantastic achievement. The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters is a City that loves art, culture and entertainment and we are once again home to a variety of performances during the Fringe Festival,” he said.

Have your Say on traffic management devices to be installed in Marden and Royston Park

Following community consultation in relation to traffic and safety concerns, the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters is proposing to install traffic management devices in Marden and Royston Park.
The devices were requested by the community following an extensive consultation process in which the Council received more than 400 responses.
A majority of the respondents were in support of traffic management devices in order to address safety concerns.
Mayor Robert Bria said the feedback identified that road closures were not supported by the majority of the respondents, instead, slow points and landscaped islands were supported.
“It is important to understand that traffic management devices strategically work together in a network which means each device relies on each other to have effect,” Mayor Bria said.
“These traffic management devices aim to reduce traffic speed, discourage non-local through traffic, improve walking and cycling amenity and increase landscaping opportunities.”
The Council is now at the stage of installing these devices and the community is invited to review the proposed traffic management designs in Marden and Royston Park (between Lower Portrush Road and Battams Road) and provide comments by Friday, 15 March 2024.
